Science Enrichment Programs
Wicked Science
All Wicked Science programs are designed to provide a learning foundation based on the goals of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Laying the groundwork for developing inquiry and process skills while drawing upon children’s natural curiosity drives the enthusiasm for these programs which excite kids about learning science.
Science in the future will look different from today as new technology is developed and integrated with existing fields. Children need opportunities to develop the art of asking good questions, time to work through guided inquiry with a teaching professional, and nurture communication skills with their peers, classmates, and family members. The activities in these programs are sure to invite stimulating conversation which, in turn, support the goals of NGSS and the American Association for the Advancement of Science towards developing science literacy for all.
Integrating Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), Wicked Science develops vocabulary, background knowledge, inquiry, and comprehension of difficult concepts so students can process more sophisticated learning as they progress through school. Drawing upon the core disciplinary ideas (Physical Science, Life Science, etc. ), students develop science and engineering practices and cross-cutting concepts. Of importance are the eight practices:
•Asking questions (for science) and defining problems (for engineering)
•Developing and using models
•Planning and carrying out investigations
•Analyzing and interpreting data
•Using mathematics and computational thinking
•Constructing explanations (for science) and designing solutions (for engineering)
•Engaging in argument from evidence
•Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information
Wicked Science also promotes the creative side with poems, songs and stories that relate to the concepts being taught. Intuition, thoughtful reflection and subjective thinking work together with logical, analytical and objective reasoning. Wicked Science programs and activities enrich and extend creativity with problem-solving and ‘thinking outside of the box”.
